"The arms race in unmanned technologies demands the establishment of our own research units to keep pace with developments," said Dobrindt, announcing plans to enhance Germany's technological defense capabilities.
In response to a recent serious drone-related incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone loaded with explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft, German authorities have intensified counter-drone efforts. The drone was neutralized by airport personnel, but the incident led to a temporary flight restriction and a subsequent collision involving an unidentified second drone.
To strengthen defenses, Germany is collaborating with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to establish a new technological center in Saxony-Anhalt dedicated to researching and developing protective measures against drone threats. This facility aims to become a unique national asset to counter increasing drone-related security challenges.
Additionally, police in Leipzig have installed an advanced radar system, EchoShield, capable of early detection and tracking of drones from long distances, enhancing airport security and situational awareness.
