Protests in Kyiv Demand Reinstatement of Former Defense Minister Amid Ukraine Reforms
Hundreds in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities rally to restore Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister, raising concerns over government reshuffles.
On Sunday, August 16, hundreds of protesters gathered in Kyiv and across several Ukrainian cities to demand the reinstatement of Mykhailo Fedorov as the country's defense minister. This marked the 32nd consecutive day of such demonstrations, reflecting ongoing public discontent with recent government appointments and reforms in Ukraine's defense sector.
Mass Demonstrations Spotlight Political Unrest
The protest in Kyiv was centred around the Freedom Arch, formerly known as the Arch of Peoples' Friendship, located in the heart of the city. Participants marched along major thoroughfares including Khreshchatyk Street, the Alley of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, and Olhynska Street, before concluding with a rally at Ivan Franko Square near the Presidential Office.
Observers noted a diverse turnout, with particular prominence of younger citizens. Protesters chanted slogans such as "Fedorov!", "Umerov is a devil!", and "Veterans, not Kim!", expressing dissatisfaction with President Volodymyr Zelensky's recent appointments. Specifically, they opposed the designation of former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service and Vitaliy Kim, former governor of Mykolaiv Oblast, as Minister for Veterans Affairs.
"Do not hinder Misha in the military niche," read one protest slogan, as activists called for a return to reforms initiated under Fedorov's leadership.
Protesters also demanded that the government continue reforms begun under Fedorov's tenure and engage in meaningful dialogue with society. A petition was delivered to a representative of the Presidential Office, urging these actions.
Similar protests took place in other Ukrainian cities, including Lviv, Dnipro, Lutsk, Rivne, Poltava, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi, highlighting widespread concern over Ukraine's defense and foreign affairs leadership.
One of the protest organisers, veteran Dmytro Kozyatynskyi, emphasised the urgency of appointing key ministers stating that Ukraine still lacks formal leaders in the defence and foreign ministries.
