Belgorod Restores Mobile Internet and Street Lighting Amid Ongoing Regional Conflict
Belgorod authorities resume mobile internet services and street lighting after security reassessment amid continued cross-border tensions.
The acting governor of Russia's Belgorod region, Alexander Shuvaev, has ordered the restoration of mobile internet services and the reactivation of street lighting in the city of Belgorod. The decision follows a thorough security review and takes into account local residents' requests.
Since the evening of Saturday, May 30, stable mobile internet access resumed in Belgorod alongside the return of street lighting. The acting governor conveyed this directive on the same day through his official Telegram channel. However, in other settlements across the region, decisions regarding internet availability and street lighting remain at the discretion of local authorities, based on the operational situation.
Security Measures and Infrastructure Challenges
Shuvaev explained that the easing of these restrictions is partly due to the implementation of defensive measures aimed at reducing risks to the population. While not specifying details, he cautioned these measures may be reversed if the security threat escalates.
"Some restrictions may be temporarily reinstated in case of an increased threat," Shuvaev noted.
Belgorod has experienced periodic street lighting shutdowns since October 2025, a tactic attributed to reducing electrical grid load to expedite power restoration following artillery shelling. The city's mayor, Valentin Demidov, cited these operational needs for the outages.
Previously, in late November, then-governor Vyacheslav Gladkov initiated an inquiry into who had authorized partial mobile internet shutdowns in the region. He acknowledged that while such measures enhance security, they also disrupt critical communication channels essential for public safety alerts and coordination.
Ongoing Regional Security Impact on Infrastructure
Belgorod, located near the Russian-Ukrainian border, has been subjected to repeated attacks from Ukrainian military forces. On the night of May 25 alone, local authorities reported two major rocket strikes targeting the region.
These attacks caused damage to energy infrastructure, resulting in electricity outages and water supply disruptions. One person was injured, and damage was reported to administrative buildings, office complexes, a private residence, and seven vehicles.
