Ukraine, Germany Discuss Enhanced Air Defense Cooperation Amid Ongoing Conflict
President Zelensky meets with German Chancellor's office and intelligence heads to accelerate air defense agreements benefiting UK and EU security interests.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held high-level discussions in Kyiv with Thorsten Frei, head of the German Federal Chancellor's office, and Martin Jäger, chief of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND), to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities amid intensified Russian attacks.
Strengthening Air Defense and Drone Cooperation
The meeting took place following a devastating Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv that resulted in at least 21 fatalities and around 50 injuries. Zelensky emphasized the critical importance of accelerating agreements with Germany on air defense systems to better protect Ukrainian citizens from aerial terror attacks.
"Germany has repeatedly helped strengthen our air defense, and we hope for corresponding leadership now," Zelensky stated, highlighting the strategic role Berlin plays in enhancing Ukraine’s security.
The discussion also covered Ukraine’s proposed "drone deal" with Germany, focusing on joint production of medium- and long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Both nations have agreed to deepen defense cooperation, including plans for multimillion-euro investments into Ukrainian long-range strike capabilities and intelligence sharing between defense ministries.
On May 11, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, during a visit to Kyiv, revealed Germany’s commitment to producing drones with ranges up to 1,500 kilometers. Furthermore, Germany has expressed its intention to join the Ukrainian Brave1 platform, which integrates military forces and innovative defense technology developers. Collaboration also aims to incorporate artificial intelligence elements into new weapons systems.
