Rescue teams have recovered five more bodies from the rubble of a dormitory at the pedagogical university in Starobilsk, increasing the death toll from the recent attack to 21, according to Russian emergency services.

The attack, attributed to Ukrainian armed forces, targeted both the college and its dormitory facilities on May 22, resulting in significant casualties. In total, 63 people, including the deceased, were reported injured or killed.

Impact on Local and Regional Stability

The rescue operation concluded with no individuals trapped under the debris, as confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The dormitory housed 86 students aged between 14 and 18 at the time of the strike.

“There are no more people under the rubble; the search and rescue operation has been completed,” the emergency services stated.

Russian-backed authorities in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic claimed the attack was carried out using Ukrainian drones. In contrast, Ukrainian sources have disputed these claims, alleging the Russian military repurposed civilian educational facilities for military use.

According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the strike on May 22 targeted multiple Russian military assets, including a refinery, ammunition depots, air defense systems, command points, and personnel. A specific focus was a headquarters of the so-called “Rubicon” unit in the Starobilsk area, which reportedly specializes in drone operations.

However, the Ukrainian military did not confirm whether the headquarters was located within the college buildings.

Repercussions for UK and European Markets

The incident underscores the continuing instability in Eastern Ukraine, which remains a key concern for UK and European policymakers focused on regional security and economic impacts.

London’s financial markets have exhibited sensitivity to escalating tensions in the region, with sterling experiencing fluctuations linked to geopolitical risk assessments. The potential for prolonged conflict threatens supply chains and energy markets, both vital sectors for UK and EU economies.

Analysts note that any further deterioration could prompt increased volatility in currency and commodity markets, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic engagement and conflict resolution efforts by European stakeholders.
